من البديهي أن لكل كائن غريزة بقاء تردّه عن الموت، ولكن التاريخ علّمنا أن أمماً كثيرة نامت فانقرضت. أما نحن فكان لنا دوماً من يوقظ النائم، ومن يسدّ الثغر حين يميل، ومن يقف على السور فلا تمرّ منه رياح الغزو.
نحن أبناء ملاحم. شهدنا الهزيمة فتعلّمنا، وذقنا النصر فتواضعنا. كنا السدّ الذي تحطّمت عليه أطماع الطامعين. لم نكن يوماً طغاة ولا غزاة، ولكننا عشنا على عهدٍ واحد: أن تُصان الأرض ويُحفظ العرض.
في ذاكرتنا لا مكان للخائن. لم نبهر يوماً بمن باع، ولم نركع يوماً لعناوين صنعتها أيادٍ من عندنا لغيرنا. ولم تُغرِنا يوماً بزّةُ سادة أوروبا، ولا بريقُ حكام أمريكا.
